Digital Ukraine

Let me shortly describe average ukrainian's day.
Waking up, you get your smartphone notification from bank mobile app that your salary is on your bank account. Decided to exchange it to a USD in the app in 2 seconds - done. Decided to put 30% to a deposit - done in 10 seconds.
Receiving email on your monthly payments (water, electricity, gas). Paying them in 30 seconds.
Feeling ill - making an appointment with family doctor in the app and uploading medical examination to my profile.
Going to the office, a policeman stops me to check paperwork. Oops, I forgot it - no problem. Opening Diia app and showing my ID and vehicle registration. By law you can use Diia instead of paperwork in almost every scenario you can imagine.
As you can see, surprisingly, Ukraine is one of the most digitalized country in the world.
A little bit of our history. Lets begin from 2020, only 3 years ago (as I remember) we haven't had almost any digital part of our government. Usual thing for any other country. However, our young government knew we have one of the largest IT community in the world and decided to work with them together. This is how we started. Started from Diia - an application that contained ID (passport), vehicle document and driving license. Of course it also meant that all registers must be transferred from paper to computer database. Only in 6 months first version of the application was published to app store and play market.
Today we forgot about paperwork and from that moment Ukraine only fastened its digitalization way and today you can do a lot more.
For example:
- All documents are digital
- Banking is online
- Online medicine
- You can register your car documents in 10 minutes
- e-Queues are everywhere, you don't have to wait in line, just come at given time
- No classic posts being sent to government. You can put your ticket online or by email
It is still not perfect even today since most of us got used to it really fast. However given the tempo of growth you are able to see how powerful our IT specialists are.
Developers in Ukraine

Today I'd like to tell you about my personal experience working with ukrainian developers.
My carreer started in far 2014 as Project manager. Actually I was planning to become a developer myself but didn't have that perseverance you need to become one. Anyway, having my passion in technologies I became a manager and started in one of the biggest companies in Ukraine and post-soviet space. Here are the thing I discovered in next 7 years working with ukrainians.
1) Software development culture is huge
Standartization, aproaches, methodologies, process improvements are usual thing. All of these may be found in all mid+ sized companies. This corelates with the quality of the product. To deliver a product we had to go through 6 circles of hell, multiple QA checks, process checks, code reviews and all had to be on the level. Given that there is no wonder most developers are serious professionals here.
2) They are talented and hard working
Believe me, you wouldn't see such talented people anywhere. Most of them have a strong engineering and math knowledge as foundation which allow them to build very complex systems and solve impossible tasks. Also, for them it's not just a job, it's a hobby, it's a lifestyle. You wouldn't see many people working overtime and learning new things at night just because the passion for the development. And from my experience 99% of developers in Ukraine are doing it, especially at the start of their carreer and even afterwards.
3) They are young
You may wonder why you may be able to see 20 years boy that is already a middle+ level developer. Let me tell you that is not a lie. This is our culture, some of ukrainians are starting their carreer early and know what they want in such a young age.
Well, that's all I can remember now, overall you may be asking, 'Artur, why are your prices for developer's hour is so low if they are so cool?'. The answer to that is simple - standard of living. It is different here but can you assume the quality of the work done is lower just because of this?
I really hope ukrainian developers will become a brand someday and will be valued even more. They deserve it 100%
